Get Your Feet Wet...

Tales of Ildikar is unlike anything you've played before. While there will be plenty of familiarity, many things are unique due to the opportunities the setting presents. Here are some things you should know before diving in:

♦ Fit for the Screen The first and foremost thing to keep in mind as you embark on experiencing Ildikar is that a gaming session should be synonymous with a favorite television series or movie. Each session is an episode, and several episodes form a season. The heroes (and villains too) perform their deeds with the kind of flair you would see on the screen. To better accommodate this, the rules include several elements that foster cinematic play - action points, spell points, and class defense bonuses to name a few. The essential element, however, is the player's mindset. As you create, play, and advance your characters, maintain the visual media frame of mind.

♦ Sword & Sorcery (and Tons More) Tales of Ildikar includes most any part of the rich heritage of DnD, but there are certainly some differences from the "standard" medieval fantasy setting. Ildikar blends a multitude of genres—fantasy, science fiction, comic and pulp action, steampunk, noir, and even horror–often in the same episode. These ingredients create a experience that is any and everything you can imagine, and they make Tales of Ildikar a new kind of fantasy. An easily-seen change is in the technology level of Ildikar's societies. Guns (primarily flintlocks and single-shot rifles) are considerably prevalent in the more violent circles, and in recent times magical innovation has led to even more fantastical weaponry. Although inventive and wondrous, most of these types of items are never even touched by the vast majority of the populace. But, anyone with enough ambition (and gold) could potentially acquire the finest in tools of war. Ildikar's most talented mages have created many magical contraptions that aid in travel and commerce as well - including animated carts, submersibles, and even the rare flying ship.

♦ Islands, Islands, and More Islands Due to a prehistoric cataclysm, the super-continent called Ildikar was shattered into myriad smaller land masses. No one island of Ildikar's remnants is bigger than say the Australia of our world. This has made the sea, ships, and sailing an integral part of everyday life. For this reason, most any person - from the working all the way up to the upper class - possesses basic skills related to sailing. Since the islands have been apart for thousands of years, endless variety exists among the Isles. Each land is unique...and each offers its own brand of adventure.

♦ An Ancient Evil has Returned Five hundred years ago, Ildikar was overrun with the vile Proteans - nightmarish shapeshifting creatures that almost destroyed the world. The Proteans conquered all lands from north to south, apparently in the impossible span of a few weeks. The unexpected, cruelly-coordinated attack left the newly conquered peoples of Ildikar stunned and hopeless. The Proteans ruled for a decade until the day they vanished without a trace. No one has seen or heard from them since. No investigation has uncovered a likely clue as to what became of the former overlords of Ildikar, although a thousand theories exist.

Mere months ago, the nation of Gamiedra revealed to the Isles that a Protean was seen and eventually killed within its borders. The resulting consequences have had a profound impact on the peoples of Ildikar…
